| Next to Highway 25 in
rural Adair County, Iowa, near a gravel pit, a large rock was a perpetual
target of graffiti until amateur teenage artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II painted
the rock. Since completion of his project, there have been no further incidents
of graffiti. Every year since 1999, Bubba has painted a new set of murals on
the rock in time for Memorial Day. The remarkable artwork shown below was painted for Memorial Day 2003. Its several views contains the names and images of fallen soldiers under their draped flag; quotes by George W. Bush, John F. Kennedy and Thomas Jefferson; images of New York Firefighters on 9/11, a fighter pilot, an aircraft carrier, Washington crossing the ice-laden delaware; and a tribute to POW/MIAs. The last picture shows Bubba posing in front of "The Rock." If you would like to see Bubba's paintings on the rock for other years, please Click here. You will be amazed as you see his talent develop over the years since 1999. Now Bubba has his own art business.
